"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: I also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several high-profile fans have publicly petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their visuals repeatedly show them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered joy you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to make music."

Historic Milestone

The trio have called into home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The project was born from a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes detail endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.

Yet the sister act will always be their number one priority.

"We have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
