A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
