A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
