The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
