Crew Member Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She concluded that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
