Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
